Our Story
HOW's history is rich and varied, and our success today is the result of many individuals' and organizations' dedication to ensuring homeless women and children have safe and affordable housing. Highlighted below are some of those individuals and the part they have played in our history:
|
Summer, 1983, Autumn Franger, a volunteer at a soup kitchen in Evanston along with Karen Singer, a staff member of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs and resident of Rogers Park began assessing the need for a shelter for homeless women without children in their direct care.
Sister Pat Crowley of the Howard Area Community Center, Kris Gamm of Triage, Inc. and Lester Czernick of Northtown Rogers Park Mental Health Center joined Autumn and Karen in strategic planning for the shelter.
Rabbi Schallman of Temple Emanuel, John Auer of the United Church of the Atonement also took part in the planning.
With additional help from The Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, Howard Area Community Center, and North Town Mental Health Center developed the concept and these supporters and others became the first the Board of Directors in September of 1984.
In nearly 25 years, HOW had helped thousands of women and children to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty by achieving self-sufficiency.
